For over four decades, Dr. Aban Movdawalla has served as a trusted ophthalmologist, building a reputation for excellence and compassion. Her journey began with gold medals at both the DOMS and MS examinations of Mumbai University, and in 2024 she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Santacruz Medical Social Association.
Family is central to her life. Her husband, Jehangir, is a practicing chartered accountant and company secretary. Her elder son, Kaivaan, is a senior partner at Ernst & Young in business advisory, while her younger son, Mayav, has followed in her footsteps as an ophthalmic surgeon and glaucoma super specialist. Mayav’s wife Purva, a skin specialist and cosmetologist, joined the practice in 2018, making it a proud family of healers. Their grandchildren, Alyssa and Zayaan, keep the family’s spirit lively.
Rotary became part of her journey in 2000–01, when she was introduced by PP Ashok Chandavarkar on the recommendation of her cardiology teacher, PP Dr. Soneji. Education projects remain closest to her heart, and she still remembers the day a village school child tugged at her dupatta in gratitude after a school upgradation project. A milestone moment came in 2009–10, when Seacoast won all six Rotary International Literacy Awards, an achievement etched in the club’s history. Her fellowship memories are just as rich—whether it was Parsi Nite, Gujarati Asmita Nite, or Nach Baliye—programmes created, choreographed, and performed entirely by Seacoasters.
Outside Rotary, she enjoys Western classical music and opera, reading, and long walks. She dreams of watching Andrea Bocelli live one day. Her favorite book is Gone with the Wind, her favorite film Scent of a Woman, and her favorite cricketer Kevin Pietersen. On her 70th birthday, she displayed her adventurous streak by driving a snowmobile across a frozen river in Finnish Lapland at –40°C.
For her, Rotary is about growth through younger, committed members. Guided by her principle “Less is always more,” she
stands ready to contribute in whatever way her President calls upon her.
Her advice to new Rotarians is simple yet profound:
“Embrace the Rotary Seacoast family with love, good attendance, and service and step into leadership at the earliest.”
